The Massacre of the Innocents
The icon depicts the Massacre of the Innocents. The scene reproduces an engraving that in turn copied a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, now in Alte Pinakothek (Munchen), dated between 1635 and 1639. The icon comes from the Ionian Islands and follows a way of depiction of the Massacre that was introduced in the region by the Cretan artists of the Diaspora who copied Flemish engravings.
