Pectoral Reliquary Cross
The Reliquary Cross is made from copper alloy with relief presentations of the Nativity and the Baptism. Reliquary crosses were the main kind of amulet used by the Byzantines. They were worn as pectorals hanging on the breast by people of both sexes. Pieces of the Holy Cross were kept in the space between the two sections of these crosses, as were various other relics. The exterior surfaces of the cross were often decorated with figures of saints or the Virgin, or with episodes from the life of Christ.
