The work was donated to the Museum by the artist in 2012 after his retrospective “Facing Byzantium”. The double faced work –vexillum– depicts in the front side a contemporary representation of the iconographic type of Sts Constantine and Helena, of the emperor that introduced the edict that proclaimed religious toleration and of his mother St Helena. In the back side appear the symbols of the three dominant monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The work is part of the series Matter of Choice that deals with the crucial and ideologically important issue of religious freedom.
